AWRN Internship Opportunity

Internship with AWRN

AWRN is seeking an intern to work in our Birmingham, Alabama office this summer with the possibility of continuing in the fall.  The internship is unpaid, but school credit is possible.

The intern will gain a wide range of experience, including organizational planning and management, campaign coordination, advocacy tool development, direct legislative advocacy experience, public relations skills, and the opportunity to work in a mentor-style relationship with AWRN’s Coordinator.  This position is ideal for someone who is interested in working in the human rights, investigative journalism, non-profit, criminal justice or legal fields as the intern will be meeting with a wide range of stakeholders across Alabama.

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:

  • A commitment to AWRN’s mission
  • Current enrollment in a college or university degree program or recently received a degree
  • A positive attitude
  • Willingness to work unpredictable, flexible hours (up to 20 hrs per week)—the position may require some evening and weekend hours
  • Graphic design and web skills: an interest in print advocacy and blogging is a must, experience with WordPress a bonus
  • Experience writing for publications such as school newspapers or blogs
  • Experience working on campaigns or working as a volunteer with a service provider (e.g. food banks, job training groups, charity walks, etc.)
  • Academic or professional experience in the fields of criminal justice, law, human rights, community service provision, journalism, or development will also be a plus as AWRN is active in all of these areas
  • Active involvement in student groups or community volunteer groups
  • Experience working with government officials and organizational leaders preferred, but not required
