The Cost of Prison for a Non-Violent Offender

Yesterday’s Tuscaloosa News ran an incredible story about Johnny Holley Jr., a man who served almost 29 years for stealing a toolbox.  Alabama taxpayers paid dearly for the decision to incarcerate Mr. Holley for so long: 

“Using today’s rate of $15,223 per prisoner per year, it cost Alabama taxpayers around $441,000 to keep Holley in prison for 29 years.”

 Many of the women currently serving time in Alabama’s prison system are doing long sentences under the Habitual Offender Act, the same legislation that kept Mr. Holley locked up for 29 years.
